The Ghost Writer

If you're in the mood for a truly suspenseful political conspiracy thriller, put The Parallax View in your Netflix queue (I won't give away what both films have in common). The Ghost Writer doesn't have much suspense, doesn't delve deep into character, and is often risible, but it is also stunningly watchable and quietly engaging.

Here are the images I loved most in it:

  • The Japanese "gardener" with his futile sweeping (how Polanski is that?).

  • The house. Stunning architecture. Great art. Wow, the arrangement in that vase is so starkly beautiful. Gee, the thread count of those sheets must be really high. And that wooden soaking tub? Well, I want to go there, as Liz Lemon would say.

  • Ewan McGregor's eyes.

  • Ewan McGregor's cool haircut.

  • Ewan McGregor's butt.

  • The leaden gray of the ocean. I half-expected two men to emerge from it with a wardrobe.

Not to mention the choice lines about the "ghost":
  • "You didn't tell me there was another writer."

  • "It was the book that killed him."

  • "You're the writer--that makes you an accomplice."
Truth be told, as with Shutter Island, the trailer is a better movie than the movie:
